Summary on Grant Application Form |
The retention of skills in metallurgical thermodynamics and their application to both traditional and new materials and processes, linked to experimenta examination of nanoscale structure by electron microscopy and surface analysis, and augmented by modelling studies. A particular emphasis will be thermodynamics at the nanoscale e.g. of interfaces, clusters, precipitates and nanoparticles, and consideration of the metallic/non-metallic interface, important to a number of integrated materials systems in electronic and optoelectronic devices, and in biomaterials applications. Calorimetry technique unique within the UK and state-of-the-art microanalytical instrumentation will be employed, as will be facilities for the fabrication of nanostructured materials by a variety of routes e.g. colloidal, gas condensation and mechanical alloying.
