Summary on Grant Application Form
Isotopic substitution neutron diffraction (ISND) is an important technique in the study of both crystalline and amorphous materials. The power of the technique in crystalline materials has been illustrated by the work carried out under the EPSRC grant GR/M21188. In the case of amorphous materials and liquids, ISND has been used to probe local and intermediate range structure. Studies have been limited by the cost of isotopes, but the advent of high detector area instruments, such as GEM at ISIS, has made the use of isotopes financially viable by reducing the sample volumes for experiments. Transfer of the knowledge obtained by the named RA in ISND from the original grant to the investigation of real systems is central to this extension proposal.
