Summary on Grant Application Form
The main focus of this project is the inverse problem of determining nematic liquid crystal director angle distributions from optical measurement. This is a special case of determining the anisotropic permittivity tensor in time harmonic Maxwells equations from overspecified boundary data. A special feature of this problem is that the director angles satisfy a system of non-linear elliptic partial differential equations. This information can be used as prior information in a reconstruction algorithm. The forward problem, in the most general case will be solved by Whitney finite elements and a regularized Newtons method, incorporating prior smoothness will be implemented to solve the inverse problem. The algorithms and code developed to solve the liquid crystal problem will be adapted to solve lower frequency inverse permittivity problems in larger domains, particularly for the electromagnetic and electrostatic location of plastic land mines.
