Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposal is to hold a week-long Workshop on Singularity Theory at the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences in Edinburgh. Singularities arise naturally in many areas of mathematics and science. Consequently Singularity Theory interacts with important areas of applied mathematics and some of the most sophisticated areas of pure mathematics. In spite of its fundamental character, and the central position it now occupies in mathematics, Singularity Theory is a surprisingly young subject. The proposed meeting will bring together the world experts in this subject (many of whom had an important part to play in the shaping of the subject itself) and a number of the younger researchers.Topics covered will include: complex and real singularities (topology an dgeometry); study of discriminant spaces and Vassiliev type invariants; singularities in symplectic and contact spaces (caustics and wavefronts, Legendre knots); singularities in differential geometry (in particular, study of Frobenius manifolds); and computer packages for Singularity Theory.
