Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project would develop the fundamental understanding of microgel and core/shell systems for controlled uptake/release and encapsulation, developed in recent years in the Bristol and Manchester University laboratories. The aim is to produce systems which are relevant to industrial applications. In particular, we wish to develop microgels with specific receptor sites (with possible further development to produce microgels as potential catalyst supports), and to investigate the size selectivity of swollen microgels. Also, we wish to investigate microgel particles deposited on solid substrates. New core/shell systems will be devised including aqueous core / solid shell particles. General methods for encapsulating oil droplets and solid particles will be investigated. It is also the intention to develop solid particles with double shells, where the inner shell contains some active ingredients (e.g. an adhesive), and the outer shell provides a protective barrier during storage, but breaks on application.
