Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal seeks Plafform Grant funding from the EPSRC Materials Program to underpin a program of research at Birmingham University into the science and applications of nanostructured surfaces, i.e., well-defined surface systems with lateral feature sizes in the range 1-100 nm. Nanostructured surfaces present the possibility to collect, organise and address materials down to the level of individual molecular species, which could be sensed, evaluated and responded to via optical, mechanical or ultimately electronic signals. Thus two important interface areas will be addressed, the information sciences and life sciences. The research will be conducted by 8 investigators, including 5 Professors from 5 departments (Physics, Materials, Biosciences, Medicine, Environmental Sciences) at Birmingham, and will be led by Professor RE Palmer, Head of the Nanoscale Physics Research Laboratory. The program will both support and exploit the new Nanoscale Science Facility, funded by JIF and due to open in Spring/Summer 2002, and benefit from the multidisciplinary expertise available in the research groups of all the members of the Nanostructured Surfaces consortium. Plafform grant support will provide a stable funding basis to enable adventurous research in a field widely regarded as a strategic frontier of science and technology.
