Summary on Grant Application Form
SummaryDescribe the proposed research in about 200 words.Autonomous spacecraft control has the potential of providing significant operational cost reductions and increased flexibility for a large class of spacecraft. The objective of the proposed work is to develop fundamental non-linear systems theory through Lyapunov's theorem and apply it to large angle slew manoeuvres. A numerical simulation will be developed in order to investigate the performance of such a method, in the presence of time dependant target attitudes and pointing constraints. To evaluate the control architecture, the simulation data will be animated. Strict validation of the method is possible due to its analytical approach. Validation will also be carried out in a real-world environment. The method will be tested for robustness against disturbances. Partial optimisation will be investigated and compared with the purely analytical approach in terms of performance and potential on-board complexity. The simulation and animation software will be used to investigate multiple stews between user-defined target attitudes with time dependant constraints. These simulations will be controlled by a self-contained software modules representative of a real on-board autonomous control system.
