Summary on Grant Application Form
The need to develop materials having less adverse environmental impact is clear. Polymers derived from potentially sustainable and renewable resources, coupled with high strength natural fibres such as flax, offer excellent potential as raw materials for low environmental impact PMCs. To date, however, the poor performance of such composites has limited their use to mainly non-structural applications. This project will address the main scientific and technologic barriers, so as to make possible structural, low environmental impact PMCs. This research project is based upon an integrated approach, encompassing aspect of fibre technology through to composite processing, and optimised by the techniques of materials science. There are a number of key issues to be addressed, which include; fibre architecture, manipulation of the renewable resource matrix polymer, processing, fibre quality and interfacial characteristics. addition, a fundamental understanding of the macro- and micro- mechanics of these composite systems will be gained as this will be necessary to underpin these developments.
