Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will examine the feasibility of integrating requirements validation techniques based on execution of formal specifications, with interaction design techniques based on informal representations such as storyboards, paper prototypes. The project will extend existing executable specification tools developed at Sheffield Hallam University to relate these tools to collaborative design techniques in HCI such as paper prototyping & storyboards. The extensions will (minimally) permit designers to scan and animate paper prototypes and combine these animations with outputs based on executable formal specifications that may be developed in parallel. This combination of approaches is intended to exploit the complementary strengths and avoid the respective weaknesses of paper prototyping and formal specification. The ultimate goal of the work is to enable a design strategy for interactive systems based on the concept of 'incremental formalisation' in which representations are progressively refined from artefacts requiring high levels of human intervention and interpretation towards executable systems. Such a strategy could support designers in selectively applying 'high-cost, high-value' techniques within user-centred, participatory design processes.
