Summary on Grant Application Form |
X-rays, diffraction studies of magnetic materials, multilayers and thin films, interfaces and surface arrays have many advantages over neutron scattering and other techniques. Grazing incidence x-ray methods allow surface specificity and depth profiling, while resonant enhancement of magnetic scattering enables diffraction studies of magnetic structure to be pursued at higher wave vector resolution than in conventional neutron studies. Furthermore the rich nature of the photon scattering cross-section enables spin and orbital magnetisation to be separated. The UK User community comprises more than one dozen groups and the new science proposed by it, in the areas1-6 above, is described in this application. Funding is requested for a second 5 year operational phase of the XMaS UK Collaborating Research Group (CRG) facility at ESRF. The proposed operation and expenditure follow the pattern of the current operational phase with the specific additions of an area detector, a 4 Tesla magnet and a third beamline scientist.
