Summary on Grant Application Form
The objective of this project is to synthesise and fully characterise new lithium nitridometallate materials towards new fast lithium ion conductors. The programme will include measurement of transport properties, electrochemical testing in prototype cells and additionally an investigation of magnetochemistry in lithium -transition metal - nitrogen systems. A number of new synthetic routes and techniques will be developed to prepare new ternary and higher nitrides and nitride halides. These will include liquid metals flux/melt approaches to the growth of single crystals and rapid microwave assisted synthesis methods in addition to more conventional methodologies. Modern solid state NMR techniques will be used to probe chemical environments, elucidate structure and bonding and to evaluate the lithium ion diffusion mechanisms with temperature. Many previous studies of nitrides have been by necessity, exploratory. The strategy presented here intends to facilitate a comprehensive study of an emerging and exciting group of materials using a wide range of modern characterisation techniques. This way we aim to assemble a fundamental understanding of bonding and redox chemistry in substituted lithium nitrides and by mapping out the structure-property relations in these systems, a means to design and modify new conducting materials.
