This proposal seeks to investigate how future Grid based technologies can be exploited to support e-science that has a large field based component where some form of detachment from on-line connection to the Grid is inevitable. This branch of science encompasses a large number of the life science disciplines and covers important areas of medical care. The aim is to exploit the provision of facilities to be offered by the Grid significantly to improve the link between the remote recording of medical information, its on-line analysis and the delivery of healthcare information to the mobile healthcare professional. Significant research challenges include: the design of appropriate devices to allow unencumbered monitoring of patients; the processing of the signals generated by these devices in order to highlight significant measurements and events; the construction of wireless and mobile communication facilities to allow remote reporting and delivery of Grid services; the development of analysis tools and interfaces, including interfaces for remote devices; the construction of privacy techniques that allow the delivery of information from multiple remote devices while maintaining the anonymity of those being monitored.
