Summary on Grant Application Form |
We request platform support for the science of the Davy Faraday Laboratory of the Royal Institution in order to maintain and expand the existing strengths of the Laboratory in solid state science, and to promote the development of new scientific themes. The work of the Laboratory in the coming years will emphasise (i) catalysis and surface science, with new initiatives in microporous and oxide catalysis, including synthetic studies of zeolite membranes and modelling of pore mouth catalysis; (ii) electronic and magnetic materials, where we plan a major emphasis on charge ordering in early transition metal oxides and colossal magneto resistance; (iii) computational solid state chemistry, where our major strengths in the field will be enhanced by new initiatives in modelling of complex oxide materials and combinatorial materials science; (iv) synthesis of new materials including expanded semiconductors; (v) high pressure chemistry, enabling the synthesis of new nitride materials. The work of the Laboratory will retain and further develop the strong synergy between computational and experimental studies. Close interaction with industry will also be maintained and expanded.
