Summary on Grant Application Form |
The aim of this project is, firstly, the elucidation of the mathematical structure and the numerical solution of the equations governing the one dimensional fast flow of a granular system. This entails analysing the characteristic directions and characteristic relations for the equations. The equations for slow and fast flow and also comparison with the equations of gas dynamics will motivate the development of common methods of solution, based on the method of characteristics. The complexity of the equations dictate that they be solved numerically.Secondly, the development of equations governing flows in the transition region between slow and fast flow will then lead to common numerical methods of solution in the fast and transitional regimes, and, where applicable, slow regimes. Analytic solutions in simplified geometries will be sought in order to test the algorithms of the mumedcal methods.Thirdly, an analysis of pressure and density waves in fast flow and in the the transitional regime will then lead into the final stage of the project which will involve the numerical solution of important industrial problems In engineering, such as fluidised beds and flow in the vicinity of the exit of a hopper.
