Summary on Grant Application Form |
The introduction of third generation mobile systems has been started in many places in the world. These systems will provide data rates up to 2 Mbps. In the meanwhile the standardization efforts have began for the fourth generation technologies, mainly for the Mobile Broadband Systems (MBS), which will provide data rates up to 155Mbps. The second main feature of the new generations of mobile networks will be that they will move into an All-IP functionality. This means that the Internet Protocol (IP) will be used on the air interface as well as in the fixed part of the network. These technologies will open the door for many new applications. Beside the traditional voice services, high data rate Internet services will also appear. However, it is not yet clear what kind of applications will evolve to guarantee the success of these new systems. These applications should be able to provide an attractive and high quality service to a wide range of users. Multicast Multimedia services to mobile users are seen by many people in the industry and academia as the main candidate to play the major driving force in the success of these systems. However, these services will require multicasting algorithms that provide quality of service guarantees to the different kinds of traffic types that compose the multimedia stream even within the mobile environment. The aim of the project is to develop new and efficient algorithms for QoS based multicasting in Mobile IP networks which have a computational complexity suitable for use in real-time multi-service environments where resource availability is rapidly changing.
