Optical wireless systems have the potential to provide extremely, high bandwidth wireless data transmission to terminals in indoor and other restricted enviroments. Complex base station and terminal optoelectronic systems are often required to achieve reliable coverage, and 'balancing' this complexity between the optoelectronic, optical and electronic componens is a difficult issue.In a WDM fibre system most components are optically transparent, and compledty is focussed at the high precision sources, their control systems and fabrication. Such components can form the basis of optical wireless access using transparent and largely passive optical wireless transceivers. Base stations that use a combination of diffractive and refractive bearnsteering can be used to map a particular wavelength to a pant in the coverage space, creating a wavelength controlled wireless network. Multiple base stations might be connected into an infrastructure that shares sources, detectors and optical amplifiers. The resulting system might carry a wide range of different services, due to the resulting optical transparency.The work aims to investigate transceiver design, the supporting fibre architecture and to demonstrate duplex data transmission between a single hub and mobile terminal. Future architectures and technologies for producing these at low cost will also be investigated.
