The need for rapid, robust and high accuracy surface form measurement is widespread with applications across manufacturing industry and in medicine. Existing single point methods are too slow. Whole field optical methods, exemplified by fringe projection, produce the required data rates but require the integer fringe order to be known or measured. Temporal phase unwrapping is a potential solution but needs many images at multiple wavelengths of projected fringes. In this proposal we introduce a new technique that shows how the measurement can be made with a minimum number of projected wavelengths whilst maximising the probability of correctly measuring the fringe order. The new approach requires less than half the number of image frames to be captured and offers similar reliability to temporal unwrapping. Furthermore, implementation via a coherent fibre fringe projector removes the fixed pattern noise associated with spatial light modulators in white light fringe projection. A dynamic range improvement of up to a factor of three is predicted. The absolute phase measurement approach is generically applicable to any system employing multiple wavelength heterodyne processes.
