Summary on Grant Application Form |
The ultimate aim of this project is to develop a new range of environmentally benign wood preservatives. We propose to study the biotransformation in wood of modem organic biocides being developed by our industrial associate, Janssens Pharmaceutica in order to produce co-formulated organic preservatives which are mutually protective in wood, but which readily degrade if lost to the environment. At the same time we will further develop non-biocidal modification of wood to augment these biocides: This work is to be done by the university partners at Imperial College and Bangor, and provides the scientific basis for our industrial Partner, Arch Timber Protection to develop a new, sustainable approach to wood preservation based on the university studies. They will also be responsible for the exploitation plan designed to introduce the technology to the treatment industry. This part of the project will be aided by the Building Research Establishment, who will extend the performance studies to ensure compliance within the framework of EN999, European harmonisation and edsting government policies of sustainability in construction.
