There is a recognition that if plastics and composites are to be used in structurally demanding (safety critical) and severe environmental conditions then there is a need for regularly checking their performance non destructively. The testing of such systems relies usually on a substantial programme of experimentation such as accelerated exposure at high temperature in an autoclave followed by test resulting in a life assessment model for each system. WMG has experience with detecting damage in polymeric compontnets using novel methods of thermal imaging which provides the additional opportunity to assess the changing stress concentrations on the component under load. The method is considered capable of monitoring the 'in service' condition and detecting material changes as they occur. The investigation is expected to provide a new ingsight in to the degradation mechanism of polymers under load in severe environments of temperature and pressure. This project brings together the NDT techniques at Warwick with the considerable expertise in durability of plastics of Strathclyde and collaborating partner, MERL.
