Residual soils, prevalent throughout the tropics, are hard to characterise. In areas of rapid infrastructure expansion (e.g. South-East Asia) they pose problems for slopes and foundations. Deriving from in-situ, usually differential, weathering of the country rock, these soils are often unsaturated with relic structure and bonding. There is poor understanding of their mechanical behaviour. There is a timely opportunity to benefit from developments of apparatus and a collaboration with a Malaysian consulting company to study these soils. High quality block samples of a representative residual soil recovered from carefully mapped locations will be used to investigate the mechanical properties of both natural and compacted soil. The investigation will be based in Cambridge using the requested new apparatus which is capable of testing partly saturated soils with measurement of small strains. A series of tests will establish relations between factors such as moisture content, fabric, bonding and degree of saturation and weathering.The resulting unique data will have general application to the characterisation of residual soils (for later constitutive models of behaviour). The requested resource, being mainly equipment, will provide an advanced testing capability for the department where the applicant (a new academic) will develop this subject further.
