The research programme seeks support to develop an advanced life prediction capability for high temperatures where fatigue, creep and environment interactions are dominant. The objective will be met by amalgamating the expertise and facilities at the IRC (Swansea) with Rolls Royce plc and QINETIC. The programme is in support of the enhanced performance capability required of gas turbines over the forthcoming decade. The scheme, which will focus on a front line titanium alloy and a leading nickel alloy used for HP compressor and turbine applications is as follows:(i) Modelling of the deformation response under multiaxial stress states at high temperatures in order to predict the stress/strain hysteresis loops for subsequent life prediction calculations (ii) A detailed experimental investigation of initiation and small crack growth from both featured and plain specimens aimed at the development of suitable laws for application in lifing calculations (iii) Development of long crack growth models to extend the current envelope of validity to support the formulation of a more accurate predictive capability. (iv) A final stage is the complete evaluation of current lifing approaches and the ultimate construction of a total life prediction package incorporating both initiation and propagation stages for use at elevated temperatures.
