Summary on Grant Application Form |
The very dilute limit for rotating BEC's provides both an arena for completely novel physics in the form of new condensed phases as well as the possibility calculating accurately (beyond mean field theory) the magnitudes of many physical processes which have counterparts in denser systems. In the former category, the proposal explores the physics of spin-one BEC's including the possibility of statistics transmutation to a state where the spatial wavefunction fermionic at fast rotation. In the second category, it is proposed to examine the role of quantum effects in vortex nucleation and the effect on superfluid dynamics of particle loss from the atom trap at very large times. Atom traps allow unsupassable experimental conditions for the study of the first of these phenomena whilst the latter provides a completely novel form of 'viscous' damping of vortex motion
