Summary on Grant Application Form
Linear systems theory and control systems design shows that complementary time and frequency domain analysis provides considerable insight into the behaviour of engineering systems. The aim of this research study is to extend these ideas to complex engineering systems that exhibit subharmonic oscillations. This will be achieved by deriving new system identification algorithms for sub-harmonic systems using the recently introduced response spectrum map together with a new sub-harmonic multi-input single-output modelling framework to provide estimates of the multi-dimensional generalised frequency response functions for this class of systems. The generalised frequency response functions will then be interpreted to reveal the energy transfer mechanisms that characterise sub-harmonic systems to provide, for the first time, a unified time and frequency domain analysis procedure for this class of systems. The results will be applied to both simulated and real data sets.
