Summary on Grant Application Form
The program looks into two complimemtary issues relating to polymer recycling. The first seeks to identify a polymers' thermal history , the second to relate this to it's future use.The first strand will create a novel method to identify a polymers' thermal history by using the mixtures of unsaturated/saturated/ hydrocarbon/carbonyl species as a fingerprint. A series of thermal histories will be produced and charaterised for an integrated range of macromoleular alkenes with different levels of tertiary hydrogen. Access to a range of related materials will provide the key to recognition of the degradation artifacts. The second program looks into the issue of whether recyclates that have undergone previous degradtion act as pro-degradants when re-processed with virgin material, an effect previously documented to occur in blends of differing photo-sensitivety. Characterisation of materials undergoing controlled weathering will be undertaken. Providing both samples and data for both programs.A study case study looking at end-of -life automotive parts gives the project strong industrial relevance.
