Summary on Grant Application Form
As the lightest structural materials, Mg-alloys are attractive to the automobile industry for vehicle weight reduction in order to improve the fuel economy and to reduce the exhaust emission. In the last few years we have seen an impressive 20% annual growth rate of Mg application in the automobile industry. However, the further growth is limited by the current available processing technology and the operating temperature of the existing Mg-alloys. The proposed research programme aims: (1) to develop a new SSM processing technology, twin-screw rheomoulding (TSRM), for the production of high quality and low cost Mg components; (2) to develop new Mg-alloys for SSM processing and for applications at various operating temperatures. The proposed research programme also addresses the solidification behaviour of Mg-alloys under forced convection and mechanical properties of SSM processed Mg-alloys. This is a research initiative led by the Wolfson Centre for Materials Processing at Brunel University and in collaboration with four industrial partners, comprising equipment manufacturer, materials supplier, component producer and a end user. The initiative brings together our extensive experience in processing of metallic, polymeric and ceramic materials, and extensive expertise in processing, development and application of Mg-alloys provided by our industrial partners.
