Summary on Grant Application Form
A new surface engineering method for alginate fibres will be developed in laboratory and pilot plant studies. The new fibres will be designed to undergo biomimetic interactions with cells. We propose that our new materials processing method will generate excellent materials for tissue engineering. We will demonstrate the potential of the materials to impact in tissue engineering by growing dermal, liver and nerve tissue in the laboratory. Tissue engineering is an Interdisciplinary field that brings together materials scientists, biologists and engineers. A key aspect of EPSRC-related science within this field is the potential to use synthetic materials, produced by commercially viable processes, to control complex cell behaviours. A crucial aspect of this rapidly developing field is the processing technology that generates materials that possess complex surface chemistries and can be transferred to a production process that must reach strict regulatory and quality control tests.
