Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will concentrate on the effects of the level of shear connection on the strength and ductility of semi-continuous composite beam construction. Significant research efforts have recently been completed which deal with the required and available rotations of semi-rigid connections it continuous composite beams. The available rotations in these semi-rigid connections is highly dependent on the interface slip between the concrete slab and steel beam. Recent research looking at the effects of longitudinal slip in continuous composite members will be coupled in the study of the strength and ductility of semi-continuous composite beams. In particular, limited slip of shear studs is affected by the span length, flexural rigidity and level of shear connection. The final result will be a unified model for the strength and ductility of semi-continuous composite beam members. In addition this project will also involve the development and augmentation of design rules for concrete filled steel columns to augment procedures developed by Saidani and Nethercot (1995) for CIDECT.The third and final objective is to forge strong links with academic institutions and industry bodies with the UK to encourage collaborative efforts in area: where complementary strengths exist.
