Summary on Grant Application Form |
In visibly heterogeneous reservoirs the usual approach is to simulate the permeability conditional on the lithoclass at the simulation location. In some cases, however, a reservoir (or a part of a reservoir) may be visibly homogeneous. In such cases, to produce optimal permeability fields zones of (high and low) permeability may have to be identified from the permeability data alone. This problem has repercussions for sampling of permeability since the frequency (or range) of variation in permeability may vary from area to area and thus the necessary density of samples may also vary across the region of interest. The project will explore a range of approaches for characterising, segmenting and sampling permeability in visibly homogenous reservoirs it England, Scotland and Ireland. The outputs of the detailed geostatistical (structural) analyses will provide valuable information on sampling strategies it reservoirs which may be considered internally similar. In addition, assessment of the application of a range of different tools (for example simulation algorithms) will enable other researchers to better inform their sampling and modelling procedures.
