numerical simulations. Such breakwaters are currently one of the engineering solutions for beach protection and coastal defence against flooding, and are becoming more attractive with predictions of future sea-level rise and increased storminess. Knowledge and accurate prediction of wave-induced currents responsible for morphological changes are critical for assessment of the role and impact of these structures. The role of factors such as non-uniform bathymetry and structure permeability, and how they account for the observed temporal and spatial variations of flow in experiments, are still not known. Here, we will address these important questions by numerical modelling of the nearshore circulation utilising some recently developed flow equations (e.g. Putrevu and Svendsen, 1999, Ozkan-Haller and Kirby, 1999). We will develop finite-volume 2DH and quasi 3-D hydrodynamic numerical models and analyse the applicability of recently developed hydrodynamic equations and new numerical models to prediction of complex flow around shore-parallel structures. The project will also contribute to the development of verified, accurate and flexible tools for engineering design. This project explicitly extends the approach taken by Liverpool Engineering Group (EPSRC GR50394/01) by taking in account newly developed hydrodynamics equations and numerical schemes. We believe that two research programmes will be complementary and reinforcing.
