The UK AS and A level examination boards place considerable emphasis on the critical scientific evaluation of methods employed in geography. Despite this fact, the methods taught, and the limited resources available to many schools, mean that students of geography are often evaluating dated scientific techniques, in many cases without first-hand experience. Geomatics is the science of measuring, monitoring and managing spatial information about the Earth using advanced technology. As such it crosses the disciplines of geography, mathematics, physics, ICT, and many other subjects taught in schools. This project will build a case study, principally aimed at GCSE, AS and A level geography, to illustrate how geomatics science, engineering and technology can be utilised in coastal zone management, a common theme running through many geography specifications, using results from research being conducted in GRN2372 1. In addition, geomatics resource packs , containing schemes of work together with contemporary geomatics instrumentation, data and software that is nominally out of reach of schools will be provided on loan to institutions that register for the service. The management and distribution of the resource packs will be operated via a website, whilst INSET teacher training courses, already being run by the Department of Geomatics, will initiate teachers into geomatics theory and practice.
