Summary on Grant Application Form |
Teachers are now being asked by Government to encourage their pupils to learn to; work in teams, be innovative and be selfmotivated. The proposed video will have as its main thread a group of Young Entrepreneurs Scheme (YES) undergraduate projects. These base the creation of biotechnology business plans on a combination of new science discoveries and biochemical engineering. The projects will be chosen to illustrate A level topics especially in chemistry and biology. These topics now include insulin and the stages by which a new medicine is tested, engineered proteins and the importance of environmentally friendly bio/chemical processes. The objective is to show school pupils several young role models involved in innovation and team activity. At the same time the YES projects illustrate the closeness of A level syllabus material to exciting new endeavours where engineering is a crucial bridge. The draft video will be trialled in schools with which the investigators are working via a Gatsby Trust-funded Biochemical Engineering Education Scheme (BEES). We hope a small proportion of the students may show an interest in biochemical engineering but the BEES scheme has confirmed that this must be a happy outcome not a primary objective. For the teachers it must be a directly useful video not a recruiting piece.
