Summary on Grant Application Form |
Nitration of aromatic compounds is one of the key processes in the intermediate and fine chemicals manufacture. The development of novel catalyst systems that facilitate nitration using nitric acid as the nitrating agent at sustainable rates and lead to scalable processes is in high demand due to the well known problems arising from the use of mixed acid. Using mesoporous silicas and impregnation and grafting techniques, we will prepare solid acids that are specifically designed to overcome mass transport limitations and simultaneously address the problem of water removal from the reaction mixture. After initial proof of the principle we will optimise these catalysts and study the scalability of a nitration process using liquid phase reaction calorimetry. The use of supercritical carbon dioxide will be studied as a means to further improve mass transport in the catalyst pore system and for improved temperature control.
