Summary on Grant Application Form |
Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. In a grid, components continuously produce data about available resources and the performance of user applications. To monitor the grid and locate resources required for a computation task, an architecture is needed that supports flexible querying. In WP3 of the EU DataGrid project a relational approach to querying is being investigated. This would provide flexible querying with general SQL queries, including joins and aggregations. However, the overall problem is not trivial since there is no consistent global information state. Furthermore, time is critical in that the data are changing even as the query is being executed. This research project aims to develop an approach that will handle these conflicting demands of flexibility vs efficiency and scalability, acceptable accuracy vs inconsistency and volatility. This will be implemented in the form of a grid information mediator , an agent that is responsible for query planning and execution in the grid information and monitoring system. This will require new algorithms and new forms of cost models.
