Summary on Grant Application Form |
The proposed network will bring together all those developing new fire retardant materials in the UK. It will combine the different analytical expertise needed for polymer chemistry, polymer processing, materials characterisation, smoke and fire gas analysis, analysis of residues, thermal analysisand modelling of various aspects of burning, and apply this to the various novel methods of imparting flame retardancy, such as the formation of intumescent layers, the use of nanocomposites, halogen free and reactive fire retardant apporaches etc. It will facilitate exchange visits for research students and PDRA's to other institutions, research organisations or industry, and help to cover the cost of such exchanges. It will also organise focused meetings around the major themes of fire retardant materials development, with particular focus on pooling the different analytical information obtained from various studies, in order to improve our understanding of the mechanisms of fire retardant action.A web-site will be set up, and kept up to date, as an international showcase of UK fire research, showing how our techniques can be synergistically combined to provide answers which will fuel the development of new fire retardant materials.
