Summary on Grant Application Form |
This collaborative proposal from the University of Nottingham seeks to build on the recently observed phenomena of air-driven separation during the vibration of binary granular mixtures. We will draw on seperate but complimentary skills in the areas of granular physics (School of Physics and Astronomy) and particle separation (School of Chemical, Environmental and Mining Engineering) to explore the fundamental physics of fluid-driven separation of fine particulate systems under vertical and horizontal vibration. A crucial element of this project will be to investigate the applicability of such a system to fine particle seperation in the process industries. We expect this to provide the foundations for a new class of fine particle separator. The aims of this research are two-fold and inter-linked; to understand, at a quantitative level, the basic physical mechanisms responsible for fluid-driven separation for fine particles under vertical and horizontal vibration, coupled with, the application of these mechanisms as the basis of a fine paticle separation process.
