Summary on Grant Application Form
A manufactured product of high quality achieves a target mean performance and exhibits little variation in the presence of uncontrollable manufacturing and environmental variability (noise variability). A major tool for design improvement is experimentation on prototype products in order to find those settings of the factors under the engineer's control (design factors) which are insensitive to the noise variability. Such experiments typically involve many factors, but they can be made economically viable by grouping the factors and experimenting on a new, smaller set of factors, one representing each group. This technique is called group screening. Follow-up experiments are then performed on the individual factors in the groups found to be important. The purpose of the proposed visit is to advance techniques for flexible, cost-effective experimentation based on group screening techniques and allowing detection of crucial interactions for quality improvement. The methods will incorporate engineering knowledge about the factors under study and will increase the efficiency of experimentation, thus widening the range of manufactured products for which statistically planned experiments are viable.
