Medium permittivity, high dielectric Q value ceramics are required as resonators in based stations for mobile telephone systems. There is growing industry;Interest In perovskite structured Nobate ceramics for such applications. This proposal is concerned with model systems based on8a(Zn113Nb213)03 (BDand related materials, whose dielectric properties exhibit opposite temperature depndendes. Characterisation of ceramics prepared with powders of ifferent 'quality will define tolerance levels to impurities and prong conditions. Starting with 'end-member perovskites that exhibit oppositetemperature dependencies, mixed compositions will be prepared that yield (i) single phase or ('n) two phase products. These will be characterised In detail SEM, TEM, Impedance Spectroscopy, IR and far IR spectroscopy) to define microscopic and mesoscopic microstructure. Using for the first time imultaneous X-ray and electrical property measurements at elevated pressure and/or temperature, the structural changes controlling changes in dielectric properties will be gated. High resolution X-ray diffraction wig be performed to define structures for simulation strides. In order to underpin the experimental studies, simulation studies of structure and dielectric properties will be undertaken. The information obtained should enable preferred local structures for specific dielectric properties to be identified.
