Summary on Grant Application Form |
In this work we propose to build on our existing expertise in the measurement of photoelectron angular distributions (PADS) and develop a spectrometer in which the angular distributions are measured as a snapshot on an imaging detector which will simultaneously discriminate photoelectrons by their time of arrival. This new spectrometer will improve the collection efficiency of our experiment by a factor of around 1000. The spectrometer will be extensively tested by comparison with results from our existing field-free time-of-flight photoelectron spectrometer whose detector subtends a small solid angle and in which PADS are measured b3 rotating the polarization of the ionizing light - one angle at a time. The spectrometer will then be used to monitor intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution, isomerization and internal conversion processes in polyatomic molecules such as toluene, stilbene and acetylene.
