Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project is a proposed collaboration between an applied mathematician working in vortex dynamics & a modem differential & algebraic geometer working mainly in the area of gauge theory. It is proposed to work on the three-dimensional Euler equations that govern inviscid turbulent fluid flows. Despite advances in recent years, our knowledge of the dynamics & direction of vorticity has reached an impasse. This proposal aims to exploit the recent results of one of the investigators where it has been shown that the three-dimensional Euler equations have a quatemionic structure in a dependent variable. If certain further technical steps can be achieved then some of the methods & results of 4-manifolds might be applicable to turbulence.
