Summary on Grant Application Form |
It is now accepted that the technology of fuel direct injection represents the best way forward for reduction of fuel consumption and C02 in gasoline engines. The injector represents the major component in such technology as the spray characteristics play a major role in fuel mbdure preparation and combustion. The proposed research programme is to characterize the spray produced by a new design high-pressure mufti-hole injector by imaging the spray patten and measuring droplet velocity, size and number density distribution in sufficient detail to allow validation of CFD codes. The spray pattern will be visualized by a high speed camera capable of revealing fully the temporal variation of spray ant its transient nature. Full details of the temporal and spacial variation of droplet velocity and size will be obtained by a 2-D phase-Doppler anemometer. An enlarged transparent model of the nozzle, made from Plexiglass, will be constructed and the combination of refractive index matching and laser Doppler velocimetry will be used to provide information about the nozzle internal flow under steady and unsteady conditions. Particular attention will be given to the development of cavitation inside the nozzle holes in order to identify the link between nozzle cavitation and the emerging from the hole spray characteristics.
