The central purpose of IMMPETUS ( Institute for Microstructural and Mechanical Process Engineering - The University of Sheffield) is to provide scientific underpinning for the development of physically based models to be used in thermomechanical processing of metals. This involves the integration of metallurgicaL, mechanical and thermal considerations in developing soundly based models. This grant application is for a portfolio of projects encompassing internal, surface and system states, as well as integrative and speculative projects. These projects will form the core of IMMPETUS activities for five years, thus providing the critical mass that will be more than matched by other activities that are drawn to this world-leading group. Specific projects cover internal state variables as a function of process conditions, composition and segregation effects; the effect of strain and strain rate history on microstructure evolution; variation of local strain conditions in single phase and duplex structures; roll-stock interface behaviour; oxide scale formation;descaling and scale-related defects; oxide scales on stainless steel and non-ferrous alloys; semi-physical modelling of internal states and texture; metal design using evolutionary computing; model-based control and management of experimental processes; process modelling; strain history modelling; and coupled cellular automata/finite element modelling and related techniques.
