Summary on Grant Application Form |
This project will use finite element modelling, with crystal plasticity based constitutive models (CPFEM) to investigate the development of intergranular and intragranular inhomogeneity in plastic deformation of metal polycrystals. This inhomogeneity is manifest as spatial variations in internal elastic strain and crystallographic orientation. It is therefore significant for the development of both internal stress and crystallographic texture, including 'microtexture'. Predictions will be evaluated- and the modelling interactively modified- with experimental results from Neutron, Synchrotron X-ray and Electron (EBSD) diffraction. As well as comparison with experiment, comparison with 'self-consistent' modelling will give important information about the magnitude and influence of neighbourhood effects and also the relative significance of intragranular inhomogeneity. Materials will include titaniumthe testing of which at different temperatures and with different grain sizes introduces significant changes in the activity of different classes of deformation modes- as well as aluminium and iron.
