The aim of the project is to develop a model for vibration from moving trains in tunnels. Current work on tracks on the surface, shows that both the dynamic forces, induced by the irregular vertical profile of the track, and the quasi-static loads should be considered. The model will encompass a three-dimensional layered ground and a tunnel structure. To incorporate moving loads and enable the analytical study of propagating waves, the response of the ground in will be calculated in the wavenumber domain. By casting the theory in these terms and regarding the geometry of the tunnel and ground cross-section to be constant in the direction of the tunnel, a computationally efficient scheme for calculating a three-dimensional propagating wave field can be adopted.Two mathematical approaches will be investigated; one that couples a structural model for the tunnel to a layered half-space model of the ground via the application of equivalent forces, and another based on the boundary element method. Each approach requires the derivation of specialised Green's functions for the response of the ground. A full software implementation will be made of the method that is found to be most productive. The model will be used to carry out some analyses of realistic ground tunnel structures in order to develop the understanding of the nature of vibration from tunnels in railways.
