The proposal is to synthesise and determine the structure and reactivity of novel metal phosphidoborate complexes. A number of synthetic strategies for the preparation of phosphidoborate complexes of main group and transition metals are described. Novel secondary phosphine adducts of the strong Lewis acid tris(pentafluorophenyl) boron will be prepared and their protonolysis reaction with metal alkyls will be used to synthesise phosphidoborate complexes. The preparation of lithium phosphidoborates will facilitate metathesis reactions to prepare further metal phosphidoborates. Reaction of tris(pentafluorophenyl)boron with known metal phosphides provides an alternative route to phosphidoborate complexes. The structure and reactivity of a series of model phosphidobarate complexes will be determined. The insertion chemistry of the metal-phosphorus bond can then be compared to that of known phosphide complexes and isoelectronic alkyl analogues. Organometallic and cationic derivatives will be tested as potential catalysts for the polymerisation of 1-alkenes and as initiators for the carbocationic polymerisation of isabutene. Homoleptic phosphidoborates will be prepared and the possibility of using anionic examples as weakly coordinating anions investigated. A series of chelating phosphidoborate complexes will be prepared and compared to those with monodentate ligands.
