The performance of a sports or play surface is dependent upon its dynamic characteristics, such as stiffness and damping. Such surfaces are currently tested using simple comparative tests that measure a single value, such as the maximum deceleration of a mass impacting on the surface. A pilot study has shown that a sports or play surface may be both non-linear and rate dependent. This project seeks to develop a portable, robust system based on an exsisting design of an impact hammer, which will fully analyse the dynamic properties of surfaces. The system will be used to map the response of surfaces to impact conditions to determine their non-linear, visco-elastic behaviour.
