The persuasive potential of computer generated on-screen personae, through interaction with human users, remains largely unexplored. In traditional transactional contexts, relationships are important and extensively researched. through experimental and longitudinal panel studies, this research will explore the extent and viability of several linked themes nature and depth of virtual relationships; appropriateness to customer relationship building, interaction styles and con physical design features; relationships and persuasive effects; possible adverse effects. The work will produce a research agenda and proof of concept results of immediate value to website designers and organisations involved in adoption, sustained use, of e-retailing and e-services.
