Summary on Grant Application Form
This work is aimed at investigating new modes of angular momentum generation in nuclei (magnetic rotation, which primarily results from the coupling of two long vectors, and chiral behavoiur, which is predicted to result from the coupling of three long vectors in triaxial nuclei). Experiments will be performed to look for new regions where the recently discovered quantum phenomenon of magnetic rotation may occur, with particular emphasis on the N-82, A-140 nuclei. These studies will allow us to explore the nature and properties of such structures when different proton and neutron orbitals are involved and the core polarisability is somewhat different to that in the two existing regions where the phenomenon has currently been identified. Such studies are important since they will enable us to determine whether or not different orbitals have significant effects on how magnetic rotation manifests itself and the influence that a moderately gamma soft core may have on these structures. Investigations will also be undertaken to search for evidence for the phenomena of anti-magnetic rotation and chiral effects in nuclei. The observation of chirality in atomic nuclei will provide the first direct evidence for nuclear triaxiality.
