Summary on Grant Application Form |
The research aims to investigate the influence of C additions on the properties of Ti-15-3 and of two simple binary alloys. Two problems are important in processing Ti-15-3; grain growth during hot working and aligned precipitation of alpha during ageing. These downgrade the properties of such an alloy. The addition of C has been shown to improve the properties of Ti25V15Cr2AI (a nominally fully stabilised beta alloy) and to influence the precipitation of alpha and this approach will be investigated in the present programme. Alloys with and without C will be forged and heat treated to produce samples containing precipitates of TUC. The amount of C required to form the optimum distribution of carbides for grain size control during hot working will be investigated and the role of these carbides on the precipitation of alpha phase on ageing will be assessed. Once the amount of C has been optimised and the processing optimised, ingots of Ti-15-3 will be melted and rolled to plate and sheet in industry. It is envisaged that this approach will lead to alloys in sheet and plate form which will be cheaper to process and show improved properties through grain size control and non-aligned precipitation of alpha.
