Summary on Grant Application Form |
Complexes of heterocyclic NN (imidazol-2-ylidene) carbenes have been extensively investigated in recent years. Many show exciting potential as catalysts. However, the properties of thiazol-2-ylidene and oxazol-2-ylidene heterocyclic (NE) carbenes (the effect of their altered electronics, their intrinsic asymmetry and modified steric disposition, hence their role as ligands in controlling reaction pathways) are unknown. This lack of knowledge currently hampers rational investigation of NE carbene complexes as catalysts. Synthetic pathways to hydrocarbyl-metal complexes of NE carbenes will be developed, and the structures and fundamental chemical properties of the complexes investigated, providing an essential understanding of their influence on reaction mechanisms.
