Summary on Grant Application Form
We will syntheises a wide range of novel, Y-shaped alkylene oxidee/methacrylate polymeric surfactants, which will be prepared via ATRP using poly(alkylene oxide)-based bifunctional macro-initiators. This is a facile route which involves no protecting group chemistry. One series of Y-shaped surfactants will be based on hydrophilic poly(ethylene oxide) and the other series will be based on poly(propylene oxide), which is thermo-responsive. Seven hydrophilic methacrylates will be evaluated, which will allow cationic, anionic, non-ionic and betaine Y-shaped surfactants to be synthesised. Molecular weights and polydispersities will be assessed by H NMR spectroscopy and GPC, respectively. The aqueous solution properties of these new polymeric surfactants will be investigated by a range of techniques, including dynamic light scattering, static light scattering, H NMR spectroscopy and surface tensiometry. Finally, their performance as new dispersants, emulsifiers and stabilisers will be investigated.
